The "picnic" portion of this annual event, held in the church's snug backyard, is the sort where most all the food is homemade by the ladies of the congregation. On a day with a lighter chow schedule, I would have found room not only for borscht (about a pint, $2) and slices of poppy and apple cakes ($1 each) but also for varenyky, holubtsi, and a square of plum cake. Perhaps a slice of walnut cake, too.
