In colder weather, H Mart's roasted sweet potatoes ($3.49 per pound, or $2.49 for "roasted potato normal") can warm your hands as well as your belly.
Although mine survived intact for only a few minutes — the pale yellow flesh was more creamy than starchy — I've read many accounts of folks who buy them more as hand warmers than for sustenance. (I've also heard mention of a movie, probably American-made, pre-war, in black-and-white, in which roasted potatoes are carried by ice skaters for just this purpose. Can any EIT reader name such a film?) At this time of year, roasted sweet potatoes are available elsewhere in Flushing, too; the going rate is about $1.50 per spud.
Previously: From the ingredients of the oblong item below ($1.50) — flour, salt, sugar, baking powder, butter, and eggs — I expected dessert on a stick. From its shape, I should have identified the one ingredient that the wrapper listed much less clearly, a hot dog. Also shown: silkworm pupae (130 g., $1.29).
