The menu and the kitchen promise hot food prepared to order, but this storefront's most compelling "calling cards" are stacked in multiple freezer cases.
A mango-chamoy paleta ($1, likely a first-timer's discount) was my sour, not-too-spicy, very chunky introduction to the frozen fare. The owner also promised that within days he would be serving "guy-Jet-ahs," traditional Mexican confections that, he proudly added, couldn't be found anywhere else nearby. I was intrigued but mystified, in part by the owner's accent, as he endeavored to explain the makings of his new product line.
Eventually he mentioned cookies. In translation, these are galletas, more commonly pronounced "guy-Yet-uhs." By and by I put together a mental picture of an ice cream sandwich — a sándwich de galletas con helado, or, in paleteria shorthand, a galleta. Alas, in light of so many ice pop flavors, on a return visit the ice cream sandwiches ($3) were available only in strawberry and vanilla. To boot, the ice cream in my galleta was gummy, if not bubble-gummy. All credit to the cookies, however — they were still firm, almost crisp.
