(This venue is closed.) Chicken cradles ginseng: This hand-drawn artwork depicts samgyetang, a Korean soup featuring a whole young chicken, traditionally stuffed with short-grain or glutinous rice, garlic, and dried jujube, in addition to ginseng root. Samgyetang is served hot, but following the logic of "fight fire with fire" it is especially associated with the most sultry days of summer.
Each year three such days, over the course of a month, are determined in advance by the lunar calendar. In 2017 the first, chobok, was on July 12; the second, jungkok, was on July 22 (when this photo was taken); the third, malbok, falls on August 11. Hot chicken soup, most agree, is wonderful in winter, too.
