No, not "dešrelės vaikams," $2 "sausages for children" served on a bun. The unassuming squarish item, difficult to render with any conviction using only pen and paper — a few heat squiggles was the best the artist could manage — is instantly identifiable by any hungry soul with Lithuanian roots. Kugelis (coo-Ghel-is) is a savory pudding made of grated potatoes and typically accompanied by sour cream (omitted in my photos for clarity's sake). Outwardly it resembles the potato versions of the similarly named Jewish casserole, but a key distinction becomes apparent with the first crunchy bite: Kugelis contains bacon.
Also shown: a few of the many homemade confections, and my eventual choice, raspberry-almond shortbread. I trusted that the buttery triangles would travel well; they did, but not far.
