The power of "Thank you": My waitress had dropped off the herbs and sprouts, and my table, like all the others, was already provisioned with fish sauce, chili sauce, and premixed salt and pepper. But when the chef delivered my bowl of mi quang, a Central Vietnamese noodle soup, and I offered "Cảm ơn," he smiled, and shortly returned with a trio of additional condiments. The third of these, a sour tamarind sauce, was the most to my taste.
My pronunciation wasn't fluent by any means; I can offer greetings and thanks just as inexpertly in many languages. It's the attempt that makes the connection.
