Nigerian pepper soup is often seasoned with spices that are rarely grown outside Africa. They include calabash nutmeg, a sub-Saharan counterpart to the nutmeg that's native to Indonesia and naturalized in the West Indies. I didn't try to decode the seasonings in my bowl except to note repeatedly, between small spoonfuls, that there's a reason it's called pepper soup. (The fellow who served me had said as much.) Mine featured goat meat and goat tripe.
